Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has indicated his readiness to become Germany’s next head coach following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation, the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed on Friday.
Nagelsmann stepped down despite having a contract until 2028, four days after Germany’s shock Round of 32 elimination by Paraguay.
The DFB said it would begin talks with Klopp while expressing appreciation to Nagelsmann for his nearly three years in charge.
Klopp, who guided Liverpool to both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League titles, is currently Red Bull’s Head of Global Football. However, Sky Germany reports he has a verbal agreement that would allow him to leave for the national team role.
Nagelsmann’s departure came a day after a three-hour meeting with DFB officials in Frankfurt, with German newspaper Bild reporting he was offered a €7 million severance package to end his deal early.
“The decision was anything but easy for me,” Nagelsmann said.
“My top priority has always been the success of the team. After such a bitter disappointment, it deserves the chance of a new beginning.”
He also apologised to German supporters following the team’s early World Cup exit.
“I am sorry and hurt from the bottom of my heart that we disappointed you and couldn’t give you any more football nights at this World Cup.”
