Three African nations will be aiming to extend the continent’s presence at the 2026 FIFA World Cup when Egypt, Cape Verde and Ghana contest their Round of 32 fixtures on Friday.
Morocco is currently the only African side to have secured a place in the Round of 16 after edging the Netherlands on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time.
Africa sent a record 10 teams to the expanded tournament, with nine progressing beyond the group stage. Tunisia was the continent’s only team eliminated before the knockout rounds.
Egypt will begin Friday’s action against Australia at Dallas Stadium, hoping to book a place in the last 16 and continue an impressive World Cup campaign.
Cape Verde will then face tournament favourites Argentina in Miami, as the surprise package looks to upset Lionel Messi’s side.
Ghana will wrap up the day’s fixtures against Colombia in Kansas City, with the Black Stars seeking victory to keep Africa’s hopes alive.
Friday’s results will determine whether Morocco will be joined in the Round of 16 or remain the continent’s sole representative.
