Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, becoming the first Nigerian artist to receive the prestigious honour.
The late musician was recognised in the “Early Influence” category as part of the 2026 induction class announced during an American Idol broadcast in the United States.
The recognition places Fela among a select group of global music legends, including Queen Latifah, Celia Cruz, MC Lyte, and Gram Parsons, who were also honoured in the same category.
Nigerian-born British singer Sade Adu also earned a spot in this year’s inductions. She was named in the “Performer” category alongside Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, and others.
Fela’s induction comes nearly three decades after his death and follows growing international recognition of African music on the global stage. It also comes two years after the Grammy Awards introduced the Best African Music Performance category, further highlighting the expanding influence of the continent’s sound.
Earlier in 2026, Fela was also honoured with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, making him the first African musician to receive the recognition.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.
In total, 18 artists were selected across multiple categories, including Performer, Early Influence, Musical Excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Award, reflecting a diverse lineup of global music contributors.
