The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has commended the enduring global impact of “Essence,” the hit song by Wizkid and Tems, following its spotlight moment at Coachella 2026.
Onanuga shared his thoughts on X (formerly Twitter) after viral clips showed Wizkid and Tems joining Justin Bieber on stage to perform the remix of the track at the renowned California festival.
Reacting to the performance, the presidential aide praised the song’s quality and lasting appeal, while questioning why it failed to secure a Grammy Award. He described “Essence” as a standout record with strong rhythm and global resonance.
Originally released in 2020, “Essence” became a defining record for Afrobeats, helping to further elevate Nigerian music on the international stage. The remix featuring Justin Bieber expanded its reach even further.
The track achieved significant commercial success, breaking into the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 and peaking at number nine — a notable milestone for an Afrobeats song at the time.
The Coachella performance has since reignited conversations around the song’s legacy, with many fans echoing Onanuga’s sentiments about its cultural and global significance.
