The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared its support for the ongoing nationwide strike by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), describing it as a justified response to the rising insecurity affecting teachers, pupils, and students across the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, NLC President Joe Ajaero said the action reflects the determination of teachers to protect themselves amid escalating abductions and attacks in several parts of Nigeria.
Ajaero commended the leadership of the NUT, led by Titus Amba, for taking what he described as a courageous stand to draw attention to the worsening security situation in schools.
He said the NLC’s concerns extend beyond teachers to other vulnerable workers, including health personnel, local government staff, doctors, and nurses who also face growing security risks.
The labour leader expressed concern over recent abductions, including incidents in Oyo State, describing the situation as heartbreaking and warning that insecurity has spread across multiple regions of the country.
He cautioned that the NLC could embark on solidarity actions if governments fail to take urgent and effective steps to address the security challenges affecting citizens. Ajaero recalled previous interventions by the labour movement, including security summits and nationwide protests, saying repeated warnings had not been adequately addressed by authorities.
While acknowledging the efforts of security agencies, he urged governments to move beyond assurances and deliver concrete results, stressing the need for urgent action to secure the release of all abducted persons.
