Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia has clinched gold in the men’s 71kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, delivering another outstanding performance for Team Nigeria.
The victory marks Nigeria’s fourth gold medal at the Games and the country’s second medal in weightlifting, following Ruth Asuquo Nyong’s silver in the women’s 48kg category.
Umoafia produced a dominant display, recording 147kg in the snatch and 172kg in the clean and jerk to finish with a total of 319kg and secure the top position.
Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi won silver with 314kg, while Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses settled for bronze after a combined lift of 310kg.
The result takes Team Nigeria’s medal count at Glasgow 2026 to eight, comprising four gold and four silver medals, as the country continues its strong showing at the competition.
