Fresh efforts to revive negotiations between Ukraine and Russia are underway, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky saying Kyiv has submitted new proposals to the United States aimed at ending the war.
In a video address on Wednesday, Zelensky said the proposals had been handed to US negotiators ahead of expected visits to both Ukraine and Russia. He did not disclose the details of Kyiv’s plan but said Washington could also play a role in strengthening Ukraine’s defence capabilities.
“We have conveyed our proposals to the American side”, Zelensky said, adding that further discussions with US officials were expected as diplomatic efforts continue.
Zelensky also warned that Russia could use next month’s parliamentary election as a justification for launching another mobilisation. He said Moscow could exploit the political process to strengthen its military capacity amid the prolonged conflict.
The latest diplomatic push comes after repeated efforts to secure a ceasefire have produced limited progress. Kyiv has continued to press for an end to the fighting, while Moscow has insisted that any lasting settlement must address what it calls the “root causes” of the conflict.
Russia has also demanded Ukraine’s withdrawal from four regions claimed by Moscow, a position rejected by Kyiv. Ukraine has maintained that any peace agreement must respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, fighting continues on the ground, with both sides maintaining military operations despite the renewed diplomatic contacts.
