Calls by Afrobeats star, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, for United States President, Donald Trump, and the international community to monitor the August 15 Osun governorship election have drawn a dismissive response from former Senator Shehu Sani.
Sani said efforts to involve Trump in the election were unlikely to yield any result, arguing that the U.S. president had more pressing domestic and international issues to deal with.
Reacting in a post on X, the former senator cited the Strait of Hormuz, the Gaza conflict and the war in Ukraine, as well as the forthcoming U.S. congressional elections, as some of Trump’s major priorities.
“Those who are trying to drag Mr Trump into our elections are just wasting their time”, Sani said.
He also compared Trump’s approach to African affairs with that of former US presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, arguing that the current US administration has limited interest in the credibility of elections on the continent.
“Trump is not Obama or Biden. He has least interest in the credibility or otherwise of elections in Africa”, he added.
Sani further referenced elections in Tanzania, Uganda and Cameroon as examples of African polls in which, according to him, Trump had shown little interest.
The Osun governorship election is scheduled for August 15, with political parties and other stakeholders intensifying preparations amid concerns over possible violence and the credibility of the poll.
