Afrobeats star Davido has thrown down the gauntlet to his Nigerian colleagues, declaring that no artiste in the country has a stronger catalogue of hit songs than him.
The singer, whose real name is David Adeleke, made the claim during a recent livestream with streamer Davrel.
Davido said he was willing to put $1 million on the table for a hit-for-hit contest against any Nigerian artiste prepared to challenge him.
“I will put $1 million cash on the table. Nobody has more hits than me,” he said.
The statement adds another chapter to the long-running debate over which Nigerian artiste boasts the strongest catalogue of hit records.
Davido is widely regarded as one of the country’s prominent hitmakers, alongside artistes including Wizkid, Olamide, Burna Boy, Tekno and Runtown.
As of the time of filing this report, none of the artistes mentioned had publicly accepted Davido’s challenge.
Burna Boy made a similar challenge
Davido’s declaration also echoes a challenge previously issued by fellow Afrobeats star Burna Boy during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020.
Former Mavin Records artiste Reekado Banks responded to Burna Boy’s challenge at the time and offered to participate in a hit battle.
However, Burna Boy rejected the proposed matchup, saying Reekado Banks was not a “worthy challenger.”
With Davido now putting a $1 million wager behind his own claim, attention is likely to shift to whether any Nigerian artiste will accept the challenge and test their catalogue against his.
