Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has encouraged people to pursue relationships with partners who share similar financial realities, arguing that economic compatibility can help reduce tension in romantic relationships.
Speaking on the MENtality podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa said differences in financial status often create avoidable challenges for couples. According to her, partners who are in similar income brackets are more likely to understand each other’s circumstances and support one another during difficult periods.
She noted that a financially compatible relationship can encourage mutual sacrifice, adding that some partners are willing to contribute even during periods of financial hardship.
Makinwa also criticised men who abandon or mistreat partners who supported them before they achieved success, only to later accuse women of being materialistic.
According to her, wealth does not fundamentally change a person’s character but instead exposes qualities that were already present.
She said this reality has made many women reluctant to build relationships with men who are still striving financially, fearing they may be treated differently once those men become successful.
Makinwa argued that genuine loyalty should be valued, especially from partners who remain supportive through difficult times, stressing that financial success should not become a reason to disregard those who stood by someone before their breakthrough.
