Families of five victims killed during the Oriire Local Government Area school abduction in Oyo State are to receive N50 million support from the Senate.
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the donation during plenary on Wednesday, saying the gesture was to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the fight against insecurity. He said N10 million would be presented to each of the families of two teachers and three soldiers who died during the abduction incident and rescue operation.
Akpabio commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for rescuing the abducted pupils and teachers after 56 days in captivity, while recognising the dangers faced by personnel involved in the mission.
The deceased teachers were identified as Michael Oyedokun, who was killed by the abductors while in captivity, and John Olaleye, who was reportedly shot during the attack on the school premises.
The three soldiers who died during the rescue mission were identified as Lieutenant F.A. Isaac, Private Silas Musa and Sergeant Abena John Jerome. The Senate President said the donation would provide relief to the grieving families and serve as recognition of the sacrifices made by the victims.
The attack occurred on May 15 when pupils and teachers from two schools in Oriire Local Government Area were abducted, triggering a joint rescue operation by security agencies.
The Senate also stressed the need for stronger security measures to protect schools and prevent future attacks across the country.
