The welfare of Nigeria’s retired military personnel dominated discussions in Abuja as the Defence Headquarters hosted leaders of veterans’ associations for a strategic retreat.
The meeting was organised under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, in collaboration with the Retired Army, Navy and Air Force Officers’ Association of Nigeria.
A statement by the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the retreat provided a platform to address concerns affecting veterans and strengthen collaboration with the Armed Forces.
Represented by the Chief of Defence Operations, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the CDS said sustained engagement remained crucial to resolving challenges facing retired personnel.
Oluyede said veterans’ welfare remained a priority, adding that efforts were ongoing to implement the recently approved salary increase and corresponding pension adjustments.
He commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of members of the Armed Forces.
The CDS urged veterans to remain patient as the necessary processes were concluded, assuring them of continued efforts to improve healthcare, pension payments and welfare packages.
He also encouraged retired personnel to uphold the values of discipline, loyalty and patriotism while contributing to national development through mentorship and support for peace and security initiatives.
