Nollywood actor and director Ikechukwu Mitchel Ogbonna, popularly known as IK Ogbonna, has spoken publicly for the first time about the death of his close friend and fellow actor, Alex Ekubo.
Ogbonna shared an emotional tribute on Instagram on Tuesday, nearly two months after Ekubo’s death, reflecting on the pain of losing someone he described as his best friend and brother.

Alex Ekubo died on May 12, 2026, after spending hours on life support. His family said he passed away at Evercare Hospital in Lagos following complications from advanced metastatic kidney cancer.
Although Ogbonna remained silent throughout Ekubo’s funeral and burial ceremonies, his latest post offered insight into his grieving process.
“On May 11th, I lost my best friend and brother, Alexx. Nothing prepares you for a loss like that,” he wrote.
The actor said the tragedy had transformed his understanding of death, explaining that the reality of loss only becomes fully apparent when it affects someone close.
“You never truly understand the weight of death until it’s your own person inside that vehicle. Until the phone stops ringing forever. Until the chair beside you remains empty. Until the conversations you thought you had time to finish suddenly become memories,” he said.
Ogbonna revealed that the weeks following Ekubo’s death had been marked by deep reflection as he struggled to make sense of the loss.
“That has been my reality. For the past two months, I’ve been trying to understand life. Trying to understand loss. Trying to understand God. Trying to understand why someone so full of life can suddenly become a memory,” he wrote.
He also reflected on the future they had envisioned together, recalling conversations about growing old, building businesses, making films, travelling and raising their families.
According to him, those shared dreams made the loss even more difficult to process, but he has found comfort in his faith.
“As painful as it is… I’ve found peace believing that God’s wisdom is greater than mine. There are questions my heart still asks that my mind cannot answer. But faith reminds me that not every answer is meant to be understood on this side of eternity,” he said.
Ogbonna described Ekubo as someone who lived with purpose, generosity and compassion, saying his legacy would be defined not by material achievements but by the lives he touched.
He added that the experience had reminded him of life’s fragility and reinforced the importance of kindness, love and meaningful relationships.
Using the tribute to encourage others, the actor urged people to cherish loved ones, forgive quickly and make time for family and friends while they still can.
“If there is one thing I hope you take away from this: love people while they can still hear you. Tell them you appreciate them while they can still smile back. Forgive quickly. Call your parents. Check on your friends. Spend time with your family. Laugh more. Hold grudges less. Live intentionally,” he wrote.
Concluding the tribute, Ogbonna thanked Ekubo for years of friendship, describing it as one of the greatest honours of his life.
“You may no longer walk beside me, but you will always walk within me. I promise to keep living, to keep building, to keep showing up and to keep chasing purpose. Until we meet again, my brother. Rest well. I love you, always,” he wrote.
