Popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo has died at the age of 40.
News of his passing was confirmed on Tuesday by several colleagues in the Nigerian film industry, including Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Godwin Nnadiekwe, who paid tribute to the late actor on social media.
In a message shared on her Instagram story, Akindele expressed grief over his death and reflected on their friendship.
“Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time,” she wrote, adding that she would cherish the memories they shared together.
Ninalowo also mourned the actor, praying for strength and healing for Ekubo’s family and loved ones.
Godwin Nnadiekwe, visibly emotional in his tribute, described the late actor as a rare soul and said the news had left him heartbroken.
“To think you already prepared your will, it’s heartbreaking,” he wrote.
As of the time of filing this report, Ekubo’s family had yet to release an official statement regarding his death.
In recent months, fans had expressed concern about the actor’s wellbeing after he disappeared from social media for an extended period.
Ekubo had not posted on Instagram since December 30, 2024, prompting speculation among followers about his health and whereabouts.
A video that surfaced online shortly before news of his death showed the actor interacting with children, appearing noticeably slimmer and quieter than usual. The clip sparked emotional reactions from fans, many of whom questioned his condition.
Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, the actor was widely known for his performances in Nollywood films and television productions, becoming one of the industry’s most recognisable faces.
Beyond his acting career, he also attracted public attention for his personal life, particularly his relationship with US-based model Fancy Acholonu.
Their planned wedding was called off in 2021, though Acholonu later publicly apologised and reaffirmed her affection for the actor.
Before his death, Ekubo had openly stated that he was more focused on building wealth and advancing his career than getting married.
His passing marks another painful loss for Nollywood and the Nigerian entertainment industry.
