A deadly explosion along the Maiduguri–Damboa road in Borno State has left one person dead and nine others injured after a trailer hit an improvised explosive device (IED) in Konduga Local Government Area.
Police sources told Zagazola Makama, a security analyst, that the incident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. on July 2 around the Komala village axis when a trailer driven by Isa Uba was conveying passengers from Maiduguri to Damboa.
The sources said the device was suspected to have been planted by Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists operating in the area. The explosion killed one passenger instantly, while nine others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
A joint response team comprising military personnel, police tactical units, Explosive Ordnance Disposal-CBRN operatives, the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local hunters was deployed to the scene.
The injured victims were evacuated to a hospital for treatment, while the body of the deceased was also taken to the hospital, where a doctor confirmed death before release to the family for burial in line with Islamic rites.
EOD operatives later swept and cleared the area, declaring it safe after the blast. Security sources said troops have continued combing operations along the route and surrounding communities to track down those responsible and prevent further attacks.
