Fresh security measures have been introduced in Edo, Kogi and Nasarawa states after intelligence reports indicated plans by terrorists to abduct schoolchildren.
A security source revealed the intelligence had been shared with relevant agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), leading to the deployment of personnel to vulnerable areas.
In Edo State, the DSS reportedly issued a letter dated June 5 to the NSCDC warning that schools in Edo North were key targets.
The letter stated, “During the conversation, the duo disclosed their plans to abduct school children in Edo North Senatorial District, as previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals had not yielded the expected financial gains.
“‘To this end, they concluded that abducting school children would attract greater government attention and potentially increase the likelihood of huge ransom payments and concessions.”
The report further added, “On 4th June, 2026, one Emmanuel MOMIDU, 25, was apprehended while he was perceived to be surveilling Makeke Secondary School at Makeke Community, Akoko Edo LGA”.
The DSS recommended enhanced security measures around schools, particularly in Edo North Senatorial District.
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonikan, confirmed awareness of the intelligence, saying proactive steps had been taken to prevent any security breach.
