The PFIPC controversy continues to deepen. Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar is demanding a joint appearance by the CBN Governor and Accountant-General before lawmakers, following what he described as conflicting explanations over the council’s bank accounts.
in a statement, Atiku said the conflicting claims surrounding accounts linked to the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council must be clarified.
The call followed testimony by the CBN before a House of Representatives ad hoc committee probing the council’s legal status, operations and ₦1.3 billion budget allocation.
The apex bank told lawmakers it opened two domiciliary accounts for the PFIPC, one in U.S. dollars and another in British pounds, based on a directive from the Accountant-General’s Office, but said the accounts were never funded or operated.
The disclosure, however, contradicted the Accountant-General’s earlier position that the account-opening process was not completed because required documents were not submitted.
Reacting, Atiku said the two explanations could not both be true and demanded that both officials appear before lawmakers under oath to clarify the matter.
He also called for an independent investigation into the PFIPC controversy, which erupted after the Presidency and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila distanced themselves from the council despite its ₦1.3 billion allocation in the 2026 budget.
The council’s Director-General, Adeniyi Adeyemi, has denied allegations of wrongdoing and called for a probe into the matter.
