Grief and honour marked a solemn ceremony in Maiduguri on Wednesday, as the Nigerian Army laid to rest Brigadier General Oseni Braimah, Captain Ismail, and other soldiers killed in a recent attack in Borno State.
The officers and men were buried at the Maimalari Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri with full military honours, in a ceremony described as solemn and emotionally charged.
The soldiers were killed on April 9 after suspected Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province fighters launched coordinated attacks on military positions in Benisheikh, a strategic town in Kaga Local Government Area along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway.
In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the Army said the nation came together on April 15, 2026, to honour the fallen personnel, describing the burial as a moment of deep sorrow, reflection, and respect.
It added that Brigadier General Braimah, Captain Ismail, and their colleagues were accorded full military honours in recognition of their sacrifice in service to the nation.
According to the statement, their deaths underscore the heavy price paid by members of the Armed Forces in the ongoing fight to safeguard Nigeria’s peace and territorial integrity.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, the Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, and other senior military officers attended the burial ceremony.
They described the fallen soldiers as patriots who paid the ultimate price in defence of the country, while prayers were offered for the repose of their souls and citations highlighting their service records were read before their families.
