Nigerian actress and producer Mary Njoku has raised concerns about what she describes as a limiting mindset within the country’s creative and business sectors.
In a post shared on Instagram, the ROK TV boss said industries with the potential to compete internationally are instead focused on internal rivalry.
According to her, this inward competition reflects a narrow approach that prioritises local dominance over global relevance. She questioned why stakeholders are more invested in outperforming one another within Nigeria rather than positioning themselves on the world stage.
Njoku argued that this pattern of competition weakens collective progress, as individuals and organisations focus on personal wins instead of building larger, more impactful ventures together.
She emphasised that growth in any industry depends on a shift towards excellence and collaboration, noting that joint efforts can create opportunities that extend beyond individual achievements.
The filmmaker also pointed out that the real barrier to expansion may not be a lack of opportunities, but the way those opportunities are perceived and approached.
She added that some players deliberately limit the scope of growth to maintain control or secure personal success, rather than contributing to broader industry development.
Njoku’s comments add to ongoing conversations about the need for stronger collaboration and global positioning within Nigeria’s creative industries, particularly Nollywood.
