An emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by the Tanimu Turaki–headed National Working Committee, is currently underway in Abuja, as party leaders intensify efforts to resolve internal divisions threatening its political future.
The meeting, being held at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge, also has in attendance members of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, making it one of the most critical gatherings in the party’s ongoing reconciliation process.
This is the third high-level PDP meeting this week, with discussions largely focused on the party’s internal leadership dispute and the proposed national convention being championed by the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee.
At a similar meeting held earlier in the week, the Turaki-led group reaffirmed its willingness to pursue reconciliation, noting that ongoing consultations were yielding encouraging signs toward a possible truce.
The Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee, which is reportedly backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has also expressed readiness for reconciliation, while insisting that its planned national convention scheduled for March 29 and 30 must proceed as part of any resolution framework.
Among senior party figures presiding over the emergency NEC session are former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, and former Minister Jerry Gana, alongside Turaki and Wabara.
In his opening remarks, Tanimu Turaki informed members that Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had sent his apology for being unable to attend the meeting.
He also disclosed that the Governor of Bauchi State was expected to join the gathering later.
Turaki said members would receive further updates on the reconciliation process during a closed-door session, stressing that consultations remain active and constructive.
According to him, despite the current challenges, the party remains determined to preserve its unity and electoral relevance.
“All hope is not lost. The leadership is working seriously to ensure that the PDP remains united and fully positioned to participate in the 2027 general elections,” he said.
The emergency meeting comes at a critical time for the PDP as leaders seek to prevent deeper fragmentation and strengthen the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
