The Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) has dismissed reports that its party leader Mr Kalonzo Musyoka has held talks with President William Ruto, describing the claims as a coordinated disinformation campaign aimed at sowing divisions within the Opposition as political realignments gather pace ahead of the 2027 General Election.
On Thursday, Senate Deputy Minority Leader and Kitui Senator Mr Enock Wambua categorically denied reports circulating on social media and in sections of the mainstream media alleging that Mr Kalonzo had recently met President Ruto to discuss a possible political alliance.
Mr Wambua maintained that no such meeting had taken place and insisted there had been no discussions between the two leaders about working together in the next General Election.
“For the record, my party leader has not had any such meeting with the President. Let me also clarify for the benefit of the country that the two have not had any talks whatsoever about working together in the next General Election,” Mr Wambua said.
He described the reports as “fake news, deep fake, misinformation and disinformation,” accusing those behind them of attempting to destabilise what he termed the united alternative government.
“Those peddling these rumours are working round the clock to try and destabilise the united alternative government. They can try as much as they want, but they will fail miserably,” he said.
The statement comes amid heightened political activity as both the Kenya Kwanza administration and Opposition leaders intensify consultations and grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 polls, with speculation over possible defections and coalition talks becoming increasingly common.
Kalonzo’s movements
Seeking to dispel the claims, Mr Wambua gave a detailed account of Mr Kalonzo’s movements on the day the alleged meeting was purported to have taken place, saying he had personally accompanied the Wiper leader throughout his engagements.
According to the Kitui senator, Mr Kalonzo first attended a meeting with senior editors at a Nairobi hotel before proceeding to another meeting at his residence, leaving no opportunity for the alleged meeting with President Ruto.
“On the day that the rumour mills were putting out their deep fake news about a meeting happening between the two, I was personally attending a meeting between my party leader and senior editors at a Nairobi hotel. After that meeting in town, I accompanied the party leader to yet another meeting at his home. If President Ruto met a man called Kalonzo at State House or wherever, then that man was not the WPF leader,” Mr Wambua said.
His remarks seek to put to rest days of speculation that Mr Kalonzo, one of President Ruto’s fiercest political rivals, could be warming up to the Head of State as political alliances begin taking shape ahead of the next election.
Instead, Mr Wambua said the former Vice President remains fully committed to efforts to unite Opposition leaders under a single political vehicle capable of mounting a formidable challenge against President Ruto’s re-election bid.
He said Mr Kalonzo continues to engage leaders from across the political divide with the objective of building a broad-based Opposition coalition that will field one presidential candidate in the August 10, 2027 General Election.
“Kalonzo remains fully committed to being at the forefront in uniting Kenyans from all walks of life and in all corners of the country to defeat President Ruto on the ballot in the next elections,” Mr Wambua said.
He added that the Wiper leader remains committed to working with other leaders in what he described as the united alternative government to agree on a single flag bearer to challenge President Ruto.
Mr Wambua also pointed to resolutions made during Wiper’s National Delegates Conference held at Uhuru Park on October 10, 2025, where delegates unanimously endorsed Mr Kalonzo as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.
He said the conference also gave the Wiper leader the green light to engage and consult like-minded leaders from other political parties with a view to forming a united front against the Kenya Kwanza administration.
According to Mr Wambua, those consultations remain on course and should not be misconstrued as negotiations with President Ruto or his allies.
“I want to assure the Wiper fraternity, leaders in the united alternative government, the Kenyan people and our friends and partners all over the world that H.E. Kalonzo Musyoka has not met President Ruto to discuss any deal about the next elections,” he said.
Mr Wambua further dismissed a video clip that has been widely shared online and presented as evidence of a meeting between President Ruto and Mr Kalonzo, saying it had been deliberately taken out of context.
He explained that the footage was recorded on March 4, 2024, when Mr Kalonzo, in his capacity as co-chair of the National Dialogue Committee (Nadco), joined other members of the bipartisan team in presenting their report to President Ruto in accordance with the committee’s terms of reference.
The clarification comes as the Opposition seeks to project unity despite growing speculation over possible political realignments, with leaders insisting that consultations are aimed at strengthening, rather than fracturing, the coalition ahead of what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 presidential race.
