Newcastle United manager, Eddie Howe has left the club with immediate effect after deciding his time at St James’ Park had come to an end.
The 48-year-old informed the club’s hierarchy of his intention to leave around two weeks ago. Newcastle initially urged Howe to reconsider before asking him to remain in charge while they identified a successor, a request he accepted.
Howe departs after growing concerns over the club’s transfer strategy and the direction of the squad, although sources say those issues were not the sole reason behind his decision. He is not expected to take another managerial role immediately and plans to take a break from football.
His exit follows a difficult summer in which Newcastle lost key players, including Alexander Isak, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, while captain Bruno GuimarĂŁes has attracted interest from Arsenal.
Howe’s final match in charge was Wednesday’s 4-1 pre-season defeat to Bristol City.
During his four-and-a-half-year spell, Howe guided Newcastle to their first major domestic trophy in 70 years by winning the 2025 Carabao Cup and secured UEFA Champions League qualification twice. He leaves as the club’s most successful Premier League manager by total wins, recording 84 victories in 179 league matches.
Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli manager, Matthias Jaissle is expected to succeed Howe after winning consecutive AFC Champions League titles with the Saudi club.
