Reacting to recent security developments in Nigeria, the United Nations has expressed concern over recurring terrorist attacks on schools across the country, particularly following coordinated incidents in Oyo State.
UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said the organisation is “very concerned” about the continued targeting of schools and children by extremist groups, noting that such attacks have devastating impacts on affected communities.
He added that UN Secretary-General António Guterres is also concerned about terrorist activities in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the aftermath of recent joint U.S.–Nigerian military strikes on ISIS targets in the country.
Dujarric further stated that the UN system in Nigeria is working with the government to strengthen the protection of schools from repeated attacks. He said the UN country team has been collaborating with authorities in affected regions to identify ways to improve school safety and will continue supporting efforts to make learning environments more secure for students.
