Fresh controversy is trailing the freezing of Osun State Government accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, with the Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives questioning the circumstances surrounding the action.
The lawmakers criticised President Bola Tinubu’s intervention, which directed the EFCC to vacate the order, describing it as a reaction that came after public concerns had already mounted.
In a statement signed by the Minority Leader, Hon. Fredrick Agbedi, and the caucus spokesman, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the lawmakers said the development exposed inconsistencies within the Federal Government.
They pointed to conflicting statements over whether the EFCC had obtained a valid court order before freezing the accounts.
“So, which is it? Was there a court order or not?”, the caucus asked.
The lawmakers also questioned the level of coordination between the Presidency and government agencies, asking whether the President was fully aware of the actions and statements of his appointees.
They accused the Federal Government of applying pressure on the Osun State Government ahead of the 2027 governorship election, citing other disputes involving security agencies, local government allocations, and political activities in the state.
The caucus described the situation as a possible test of what it called the misuse of federal institutions against opposition states.
It urged President Tinubu to ensure that all political actors are allowed to participate freely in the democratic process, warning that intimidation, violence, and abuse of state institutions have no place in a democracy.
