The inauguration of the new ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja marks a renewed commitment to regional integration and economic transformation, according to President Bola Tinubu.
Represented by Vice President, Kashim Shettima, at the commissioning ceremony, the President described the new complex as a symbol of resilience and the region’s collective resolve to strengthen cooperation among member states.
He urged ECOWAS to move beyond being a regional market to becoming a regional production base, saying deeper industrialisation, stronger regional value chains and expanded intra-African trade must drive the bloc’s future.
Tinubu also acknowledged the security and economic challenges facing the region, stressing that regional integration must now extend beyond economics to encompass collective security, political stability and sustainable development.
Also speaking, Sierra Leone’s President and Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Julius Bio, said the new headquarters represents a renewed commitment to the more than 400 million people of West Africa, urging member states to focus on transforming lives through stronger regional cooperation.
The leaders also expressed appreciation to the Chinese government for financing the new ECOWAS headquarters.
