A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of suspected terror financier, Samaila Kaigama, in the custody of the State Security Service, SSS, after he was arraigned on allegations of financing ISWAP and Boko Haram.
The SSS accused Kaigama of raising money from members of the public while negotiating the release of kidnapped victims, with the prosecution alleging that the funds were intended to support the activities of the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, and Boko Haram.
According to the prosecution, Kaigama also failed to disclose information that could have helped security agencies identify and arrest members of the terrorist groups and prevent attacks.
The alleged offences were said to have taken place in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State between January and June this year.
Kaigama is facing four counts bordering on alleged terrorism financing and concealing information about suspected terrorists. He pleaded not guilty to all the charges.
Following his plea, prosecuting counsel, Caliatus Eze, urged the court to remand the defendant in SSS custody, citing national security concerns and the need to ensure his safety.
Although defence counsel, Hamza Dantanni, opposed the application, Justice Salim Ibrahim granted the prosecution’s request and ordered that Kaigama remain in the custody of the SSS.
The judge further directed that the defendant be given unrestricted access to his lawyer and two family members, particularly his wife and uncle, and receive adequate medical attention while in custody.
The case was adjourned until September 24 for the commencement of trial.
