As security threats continue to evolve, the Nigerian Army has intensified efforts to improve its ability to detect and neutralise Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs, through a specialised seminar for military engineers in Kaduna.
The programme, organised by the 41 Engineer Brigade of the 1 Division Nigerian Army, was held alongside the graduation ceremony for participants of Explosive Ordnance Disposal, EOD, X2 Course 126.
Addressing participants, the Commander, Corps of Engineers, Major General S.T. Shafaru, represented by Major General Josiah Attah, said the training was designed to strengthen the operational capacity of Army engineers engaged in counter-IED missions across the country.
He explained that the initiative supports the Nigerian Army’s drive to build a more adaptable and resilient force capable of responding effectively to modern security challenges during joint and multi-agency operations.
According to Shafaru, Army engineers play a critical role in clearing routes of explosive threats before troops and civilians can safely access affected areas, while EOD specialists are trained to identify, disarm and safely dispose of explosive devices.
He added that the Corps has continued to partner with the British Military Assistance Training Team and the German Training and Assistance Group to enhance technical expertise and intelligence sharing. He also called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and report suspicious objects or activities that could help prevent attacks.
Shafaru said the increasing use of IEDs in conflict zones underscores the need for sustained training and disclosed that the Army has approved the upgrade of facilities at the 41 Engineer Brigade Training School, alongside the provision of additional training equipment to improve practical exercises.
In a goodwill message, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division Nigerian Army and Commander, Sector 1, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Abubakar Wase, represented by Brigadier General Anwar Abdullahi, described the seminar as an important platform for strengthening cooperation among the military and other security agencies in addressing explosive threats.
He said the programme reflects the Chief of Army Staff’s commitment to operational readiness through continuous mission-focused training and innovation, urging participants to apply the knowledge gained in their respective deployments.
