British screenwriter and filmmaker Steven Knight has hinted at a fresh creative direction for the upcoming James Bond film he is writing for Amazon, suggesting the iconic spy franchise is set for a significant reinvention.
Knight, best known for creating the hit series Peaky Blinders, revealed that he has been given creative freedom to explore new dimensions of the legendary MI6 agent, originally created by author Ian Fleming.
Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival in an interview with Screen magazine, Knight described the Bond character as enduring and adaptable while maintaining a strong core identity.
“Bond has been bulletproof. People have been able to make mistakes and variations and the character has survived,” he said.
He added that the essence of the character remains untouchable, comparing it to something foundational and timeless.
“The person you are talking about is folklore,” he noted.
Knight also revealed that his writing process has involved extensive research, including conversations with members of the SAS and other undisclosed intelligence and security personnel to better understand real-world operations.
He said these discussions have informed the tone and realism of the upcoming project.
“I am talking to them about what they do every day. It’s all real,” he said, describing the influence of real-life experiences on the screenplay.
The writer further noted that Bond’s creator, Ian Fleming, drew inspiration from his own wartime experience as an intelligence officer during the Second World War.
Despite the insights shared, Knight declined to disclose details of the script, saying he could not reveal any specific plot elements.
“I can’t say anything on the script,” he told reporters.
The filmmaker is currently in Cannes promoting his Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham, where Peaky Blinders is filmed, while also working on a new instalment of the series.
He confirmed that production on the next Peaky Blinders project is underway and nearing completion, promising fans a surprising outcome when it is released.
