Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has urged the club to make a move for Tottenham Hotspur and Argentina defender Cristian Romero during the summer transfer window.
The 28-year-old, who celebrated his birthday in April, is reportedly considering a move away from Spurs despite having a contract with the club until June 2029.
Romero has attracted interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal, Serie A champions Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid in recent weeks.
Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Scholes called on Michael Carrick’s side to bring the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner to Old Trafford.
He stated (h/t Metro), “I think they addressed the forward positions last summer, but they likely need two centre-backs. You may find this amusing, and I might face criticism for this, but I would pursue Cristian Romero from Tottenham.
“I recognize he has a fiery temperament and disciplinary challenges, yet he possesses the potential to be an excellent centre-back, someone Michael Carrick could effectively manage.”
Scholes also argued that Romero would be an upgrade on Manchester United’s current defensive options, including Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt.
“They are discussing a fee of 30 or 40 million pounds for a player who has played as a centre-back in a World Cup final.
“I acknowledge his disciplinary issues, but I would still acquire him. I believe they are in dire need of a centre-back… the current players are not up to standard.”
Romero has made 156 appearances for Tottenham since joining the club in 2021, scoring 13 goals across all competitions. He has also received 44 yellow cards and six red cards during his time with Spurs.
