Former Manchester United and France striker Louis Saha has described Jadon Sancho as the most disappointing acquisition in the club’s history.
Under Sir Alex Ferguson’s era, Manchester United built a reputation for smart recruitment, but that standard has declined since his departure in 2013. Despite spending heavily in the transfer market over the years, the club has achieved limited success and has yet to reclaim the Premier League title.
High-profile signings such as Paul Pogba, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Romelu Lukaku, and Rasmus Hojlund — each costing at least £70m — rank among the club’s most expensive transfers, alongside Harry Maguire. However, none have fully lived up to expectations based on their transfer fees.
Saha singled out Sancho as the most underwhelming of the group. Signed for £73m in 2021, the winger managed just 12 goals in 83 appearances before being loaned out to Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea, and Aston Villa.
Although still tied to Manchester United, Sancho is expected to part ways with the club when his current contract expires in the summer.
Saha admitted he had high hopes for the winger upon his arrival at Old Trafford, citing his exceptional performances at Borussia Dortmund, but noted that his struggles remain difficult to explain.
He told BetVictor, “I believe Jadon Sancho is the most disappointing signing in Manchester United history.
“This is due to the level he demonstrated at Borussia Dortmund prior to his transfer; he exhibited immense potential as he is an extraordinary talent.
“It seemed like a mystery. I am uncertain about what transpired, but he did not come close to reaching his peak, and I think he requires a fresh start, similar to Marcus Rashford.
“I was truly fortunate to have been a football player, and despite facing numerous injuries, I wish I could have participated in as many matches as Sancho has at his age and with his skill set.
“I would have genuinely loved for him to succeed at Old Trafford because he possesses the ability to accomplish remarkable feats, making this situation quite disappointing.”
