Tensions between Russia and Europe have escalated after President Vladimir Putin threatened to seize European vessels in response to plans to sell cargo confiscated from Russian “shadow fleet” ships.
Several European countries have intercepted vessels carrying Russian oil in breach of sanctions, while new EU measures allow member states to sell seized cargo. Putin condemned the move as “piracy and banditry”, warning that Moscow would “respond in kind.”
Speaking while overseeing naval drills in Russia’s Far East, Putin said Moscow could act “wherever we ourselves deem necessary and appropriate – anywhere”.
The warning follows reports that Sweden plans to transfer a seized Russian vessel to Ukraine over allegations that it transported grain from occupied Ukrainian territory.
The developments come amid heightened regional tensions and growing concerns over deeper military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.
