Peru and Mexico have agreed to restore diplomatic relations, ending months of strained ties triggered by a dispute over political asylum and the fallout from Peru’s 2022 constitutional crisis.
In a joint statement issued on Friday, both governments confirmed the restoration of diplomatic ties and announced that Peru had granted former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez safe-conduct to travel to Mexico after she was granted asylum at the Mexican embassy in Lima.
Relations between the two countries deteriorated late last year after Mexico granted asylum to Chávez, a former official in the administration of ousted President Pedro Castillo. She faces conspiracy charges over her alleged role in Castillo’s failed 2022 attempt to dissolve Congress before he was removed from office.
The diplomatic row escalated when Peru’s Congress declared Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum persona non grata, accusing Mexico of interfering in Peru’s internal affairs through its response to the political crisis.
The decision to restore diplomatic relations marks a significant step toward repairing bilateral ties, with both governments signalling a willingness to move beyond the impasse and strengthen cooperation.
