Nigeria’s Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, says the Nigerian Navy’s use of modern technology is making a real difference in the fight against crude oil theft and other crimes in the country’s waterways.
Speaking on a television interview, Abbas explained that improved surveillance and monitoring systems have helped the Navy track and disrupt illegal oil bunkering activities more effectively. He said technology has become a key part of naval operations, allowing security agencies to detect and respond faster to criminal activity at sea and along inland waterways.
According to him, these efforts have led to a noticeable drop in crude oil theft and sea robbery incidents, improving safety in coastal and riverine communities. He added that the situation is now more stable compared to previous years.
Abbas also noted that the Nigerian Navy has expanded its operations beyond the sea, with personnel supporting land-based missions targeting terrorism, insurgency, and other forms of criminality.
He said continued collaboration among security agencies, along with greater use of technology, will be essential to maintaining recent gains in maritime and national security.
