Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2027.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper was due to become a free agent this summer but will now continue with the Bundesliga champions into a 16th season in Munich.
“It was a clear decision after taking some time to reflect,” said Neuer.
“All the conditions are met here: with this team we can beat any opponent,” he said.
Widely regarded as one of football’s greatest goalkeepers, Neuer placed third in the 2014 Ballon d’Or rankings behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the last goalkeeper to finish in the top three.
According to German newspaper Bild, Neuer is expected to play a reduced role next season as Bayern prepare Jonas Urbig for a gradual transition into the first-team position.
The club has also renewed the contract of reserve goalkeeper Sven Ulreich for another year.
