Violence following a football match in western Libya has left several people wounded, while a government building was torched in the capital, Tripoli.
The unrest broke out in Tarhuna, about 80 kilometres south of Tripoli, after Thursday’s clash between Al-Ittihad SCSC of Tripoli and Asswehly SC of Misrata.
According to Libyan news agency LANA, the match, played behind closed doors, was halted moments before full-time after Al-Ittihad players protested over a penalty appeal they felt was wrongly denied.
The disagreement later sparked clashes between supporters and security personnel outside the stadium.
The Libyan Presidential Council said the headquarters of the council of ministers in Tripoli was attacked “with acts of sabotage and arson”.
Authorities said the fire was quickly brought under control.
The council also called for an investigation into the incident, stressing that grievances should be handled through legal means “not through violence”.
