Bukola Olopade, the Director General of the National Sports Commission, has extended high praise to the family of table tennis legend Quadri Aruna following the remarkable performance of his son, Junior Aruna, at the WTT Youth Contender in Luxembourg. The country’s primary sports regulatory body expressed immense pride in the young athlete’s achievements, as he returns home with two medals from the prestigious international youth circuit.
The younger Aruna’s campaign was highlighted by a silver-medal finish in the U-11 division and a bronze in the U-13 category. His road to the U-13 podium was a testament to his mental fortitude. After suffering a straight-sets defeat in his opening fixture against Italy’s Mattia Somaini, the budding star displayed great character to secure a narrow 3-2 victory over Lorenzo Armani, followed by a dominant 3-0 shutout of Aaron Xia to advance from the group phase.
His momentum continued into the knockout rounds, where he eliminated Poland’s Antoni Zając with a 3-0 sweep in the round of 16 and defeated Bulgarian prospect Dan Zhelyazkov 3-1 in the quarter-finals. Although his quest for gold in this bracket was halted in the semi-finals by France’s Sacha Douaran, the bronze medal served as a definitive sign that the young Aruna is establishing his own identity on the global stage.
The prospect’s finest run occurred on April 11 in the U-11 event. After navigating the initial rounds, he produced a stellar performance in the semi-finals, overcoming local favorite Noah Wolter of Luxembourg in a five-set thriller to secure a spot in the final. In the championship match, he faced a rematch with Zhelyazkov. Despite a valiant effort that saw him lose a marathon 15-13 opening set, Aruna ultimately fell 11-8, 11-8 in the subsequent frames to claim the silver medal. This dual-medal haul solidifies his status as a rising force in international youth table-tennis.
