A political shake-up has hit Moldova after Prime Minister,Alexandru Munteanu, announced his resignation, a decision that has also led to the dissolution of his government.
Munteanu said in a social media post that he stepped down after determining he could no longer fulfil his mandate in line with his principles and convictions. He gave no further explanation.
President Maia Sandu confirmed that the outgoing prime minister will remain in a caretaker role until a replacement is appointed. She said consultations with parliamentary groups will begin next week to select a new candidate.
The resignation comes as Sandu’s pro-European administration faces increasing scrutiny over governance issues in state-owned enterprises, including the aviation body MoldATSA.
Allegations surrounding appointments and management practices have prompted the creation of a parliamentary investigative committee to review recruitment processes and oversight in public institutions.
Munteanu, appointed following the 2025 parliamentary elections, had been tasked with advancing Moldova’s push toward European Union integration.
