Afrobeat musician Made Kuti has revealed that he did not kneel when proposing to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso, because he views marriage as a mutual agreement rather than a one-sided request.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Timeless Podcast on the Nix Network YouTube channel, the 30-year-old explained that he and his partner approached the decision to marry as equals.
According to him, he deliberately avoided the traditional gesture of kneeling because he believed both parties were making a shared commitment.
“I did not go down on my knees when proposing to my wife because I told her it was a mutual decision. We are not begging each other to be with each other,” he said.
Kuti and Onyenso tied the knot in a private ceremony held in Lagos in November 2023.
The musician also revealed that his wife was once his “school daughter,” adding another layer of familiarity to their relationship prior to marriage.
In 2025, Kuti addressed public criticism surrounding their union, particularly comments tied to their different ethnic backgrounds. He described such reactions as rooted in ethnic bias, which he strongly rejected as outdated thinking.
He further argued that ethnic prejudice reflects a “slave mentality,” reinforcing his long-standing stance on unity and inclusivity within African societies.
