Fourteen people have been killed after a landslide struck near the Tsadkane Mariam Monastery in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, according to the state-run Amhara Media Corporation.
The disaster occurred close to the Tsadkane Mariam Monastery in the North Shewa zone of the Amhara region, according to the state-run Amhara Media Corporation.
Authorities said rescue workers, assisted by excavation equipment, were deployed to the site to retrieve victims buried beneath the debris. Recovery efforts were still underway as officials searched for additional bodies.
State media did not provide an official explanation for what triggered the landslide. However, independent local media reports indicated that days of heavy rainfall may have caused the slope to collapse.
Ethiopia is currently experiencing its main rainy season, which typically lasts from June through September and is often associated with flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.
Officials have not released further details about the victims or indicated whether more people remain missing as emergency operations continue.
