King Charles III has called for deeper cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States, telling lawmakers in Congress that global challenges require joint action.
He spoke during a joint session of the United States Congress in Washington, where he is on a state visit with Queen Camilla. The King met Donald Trump earlier at the White House before delivering the address.
The King said both nations face shared threats and must work more closely on security and defence. He added that continued support for Ukraine is needed to secure a lasting peace.
He also stressed that past achievements are not enough in a changing world.
“The challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone,” he told lawmakers.
The speech touched on long-standing defence ties between both countries. The King said military and intelligence links have developed over decades and help keep citizens safe.
He referred to past cooperation after the September 11 attacks and said both countries continue to stand together.
“We stood with you then and we stand with you now in solemn remembrance of a day that shall never be forgotten,” he said.
The King also spoke about the role of law in both countries, linking it to economic growth and stability. He said clear rules and independent courts have supported development on both sides.
Towards the end, he turned to the environment and warned that protecting nature is key to future security and prosperity.
“We ignore at our peril the fact that these natural systems, in other words, nature’s own economy, provide the foundation for our prosperity and our national security,” he said.
He closed by urging both countries to remain outward-looking and committed to shared goals, adding that actions matter as much as words.
