Veteran Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has revealed that he intentionally moved away from the “bad boy” image that defined much of his early career, saying the decision was necessary for his personal and professional growth.
Speaking during a recent interview with media personality Joey Akan, the actor said his public persona was shaped partly by external influences within the entertainment industry. However, he decided to reinvent himself after realising the image had outlived its usefulness.
According to Iyke, many entertainers struggle to remain relevant because they fail to recognise when it is time to evolve or embrace a new phase in their careers.
He explained that while the “bad boy” brand worked in the past, it eventually became incompatible with the relationships and opportunities that came with personal and career advancement.
“External forces play a great part in who you become in the entertainment industry,” he said.
“At every point in time something is serviceable. We can all agree the ‘bad boy’ image was serviceable then. But as you advance in life, you meet important people that your ‘bad boy’ persona is anathema to how they live.”
Iyke added that knowing when to leave behind an old identity is crucial to long-term success.
“Not knowing when to exit the stage is a problem a lot of us are having in entertainment. Let’s just say I knew when to exit,” he said.
Reflecting on his transformation, the actor maintained that abandoning the persona allowed him to move forward, saying the image had fulfilled its purpose but was no longer beneficial to his future.
