Content creator Jarvis has sparked conversation online after questioning whether the punishment for bigamy under Nigeria’s Marriage Act applies to both men and women.
Her remarks followed the resurgence of a video from her court wedding to fellow TikTok creator Hamzat Habeeb, popularly known as Peller. During the ceremony, the marriage registrar informed the couple that entering another marriage while legally married constitutes the offence of bigamy, carrying a prison sentence of at least five years without the option of a fine.
Reacting in a trending video, Jarvis said the warning caught her attention after she watched the wedding clip again.
She wondered aloud whether the legal consequence applied to both spouses or only to men.
Referring to the registrar’s statement, she joked that she hoped the punishment was not meant for both of them before adding that “nothing will happen in Jesus’ name.”
Jarvis’ reaction comes a day after Peller’s humorous response during the ceremony also attracted attention online.
Visibly surprised by the registrar’s explanation of the law, Peller interrupted to ask if the prison sentence was truly connected to marriage. Although he assured everyone that they had no intention of breaking their vows, he admitted he did not expect imprisonment to feature in a discussion about love.
The social media personalities officially legalised their union on Wednesday, July 29, while their formal wedding ceremony is scheduled for August 1, 2026.
