As concerns over insecurity continue to grow nationwide, presidential spokesman Daniel Bwala has said Nigerians are entitled to defend themselves within the law, including through licensed firearm ownership.
Bwala, who serves as Senior Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, made the remarks in a television interview while addressing concerns over rising insecurity across the country.
His comments come amid renewed public concern over insecurity, including recent abductions of schoolchildren and attacks on teachers in Oyo State, which have triggered calls for stronger action from the government.
According to him, the Nigerian Constitution recognises the right to private defence, stressing that citizens are permitted to protect themselves within legal limits.
He added that communities also have a role to play in securing themselves by organising lawful vigilante structures and applying through the appropriate government channels for licences to possess approved firearms.
The presidential aide, however, assured Nigerians that the federal government remains committed to restoring security and rebuilding public confidence in affected communities.
