The Democracy and Good Governance Watch Initiative (DGGWI) has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to take steps to lift the court order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government.
The group described the President’s intervention as a reflection of his commitment to democratic principles, constitutional governance, institutional independence and the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.
DGGWI said Tinubu’s concerns over the timing of the EFCC action, coming ahead of the Osun State governorship election, demonstrated his commitment to national interest and the need to ensure that justice is not only delivered but perceived to be fair.
The organisation also welcomed the President’s position that anti-corruption agencies must continue to operate independently, professionally and without political influence, noting that such an approach strengthens democratic institutions.
It added that while government agencies must perform their lawful duties, they must also consider the wider public interest and avoid actions that could create unnecessary tension or affect confidence in the electoral process.
According to DGGWI, the directive has boosted confidence in the neutrality of the Federal Government ahead of the Osun governorship election, stressing that the outcome of the poll should be determined by the choice of voters.
The group further commended the EFCC for its anti-corruption efforts and urged the commission to continue carrying out its responsibilities with fairness, transparency and professionalism.
DGGWI called on political parties, candidates, security agencies, electoral authorities and citizens to maintain peace and responsibility before, during and after the election.
It said the President’s action reinforces the importance of democracy, constitutionalism and the rule of law as key principles of his administration.
