President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that his administration will intensify efforts to ease economic hardship and tackle insecurity, declaring that the Federal Government will never surrender to terrorists or bandits.
The President also pledged that securing the release of all persons held captive across the country remains a top priority.
The assurances were conveyed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
Delivering the President’s message, Akume congratulated Nigerians on 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, describing the milestone as a testament to the resilience and sacrifices of citizens who fought for the restoration of democracy.
He paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle and assured Nigerians that the administration remains committed to delivering sustainable democratic dividends and reducing the socio-economic challenges facing the country.
Akume acknowledged the hardship confronting many households, including insecurity, kidnappings and displacement, but said the government was responding with compassion and a strong sense of responsibility.
On security, he stressed that protecting lives and property remains a top priority, adding that security agencies are being strengthened to safeguard communities and secure the release of those in captivity.
He maintained that the Federal Government would not succumb to terrorism, banditry or any form of criminal intimidation. The SGF also urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to reject violence, hate campaigns and divisive rhetoric as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
He called on religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups and the media to promote peace, tolerance and national unity, while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to democratic governance and peaceful coexistence.
