Grammy-nominated Afrobeats artist Davido has stated that taking on a government position would not prevent him from continuing his music career, suggesting that both roles could be managed simultaneously.
Speaking during a livestream conversation with Davrel, the singer explained that his passion for music would remain intact even if he ever served in public office.
He pointed to former Haitian President Michel Martelly as an example, noting that Martelly continued performing and even went on tours while holding presidential office in Haiti.
According to Davido, public service would not necessarily end his artistic output, although he acknowledged that his performance schedule would likely reduce.
“I would still be performing if I ever chose to work for the government. That doesn’t stop anything, in my opinion,” he said during the livestream.
He added that Martelly’s experience demonstrated how political leadership and music can overlap, referencing the former president’s continued engagement with live performances during his tenure.
Despite his comments, Davido made it clear that he is no longer interested in pursuing a political career. He explained that his observations of Nigerian entertainers who have transitioned into politics influenced his decision to step away from such ambitions.
The singer noted that, in his view, many celebrities who have ventured into politics have struggled to achieve meaningful success, which contributed to his reassessment of a political path.
Davido, one of Africa’s most prominent music exports, has previously been linked to political conversations in Nigeria but says his focus remains on his music career going forward.
