Fresh violence in Mali has left the country reeling, with Defence Minister, General Sadio Camara, among those killed in coordinated attacks.
Camara died alongside one of his wives and two grandchildren after a car bomb exploded at his residence in Kati on Saturday.
A central figure in the military leadership that emerged from the 2020 and 2021 coups, he played a key role in the administration of interim president, Colonel Assimi Goïta.
The attacks, reportedly carried out by suspected Al-Qaeda-linked militants and Tuareg rebel groups, triggered multiple explosions across different parts of the country and forced a temporary shutdown of Mali’s main airport.
In a statement, the Malian military confirmed that fighting is ongoing, noting that defence and security forces are actively responding to the assaults.
Mali continues to grapple with a persistent insurgency that has shaped its political landscape since the coups that led to the dissolution of political parties.
