Comedian Ayo Makun has spoken out against what he describes as society’s growing habit of taking sides in personal conflicts without first understanding what caused them.
In a post shared on X, the entertainer observed that public discourse, especially on social media, often reduces complex relationship issues into simple “good versus bad” narratives.
He argued that both emotional neglect and betrayal are deeply painful experiences, but stressed that one form of hurt should not automatically be used to excuse or justify another.
According to him, many relationships could survive longer if both individuals involved took responsibility for their actions instead of shifting blame or turning private disagreements into public battles.
Makun noted that the trend is even more pronounced in the social media era, where public opinion quickly divides people into heroes and villains, particularly when public figures are involved.
He called for greater reflection and nuance when judging such situations, adding that meaningful resolution is more likely when both sides acknowledge their role in a breakdown.
In his words:
“We have normalised choosing sides so much that we no longer ask what truly went wrong.
“Emotional neglect is painful. Betrayal is painful too. One hurt should not automatically become justification for another. Maybe relationships would survive more if accountability was shared instead of outsourced.”
