Arsenal have expressed strong interest in signing Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães as part of Mikel Arteta’s squad reinforcement plans.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that the Gunners made initial contact with Newcastle within the last 24 hours over a potential deal for the Brazilian international.
The North London club are said to have tabled an offer worth £55m, which was turned down immediately by Newcastle, who are unwilling to sanction his departure at that price.
The Magpies have made it clear they intend to retain the 28-year-old, who remains a key figure in their midfield.
Guimarães, who has two years remaining on his current contract, has also been in fine form for Brazil at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.
