Health authorities in Africa have confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with officials reporting dozens of deaths and hundreds of suspected infections.
The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said the outbreak has been recorded in Ituri Province, where surveillance teams are now tracking the spread of the disease.
According to the agency, 246 suspected cases have been identified, while 65 deaths have already been recorded. Among laboratory-confirmed patients, four fatalities have been reported.
Africa CDC said it is coordinating closely with the DRC government and neighbouring countries, including Uganda and South Sudan, to strengthen cross-border monitoring and improve emergency response measures.
An emergency coordination meeting has also been convened with global health partners to boost preparedness and containment efforts.
